Abstract

Polymers of p-alkyl styrenes having from 3 to 20 carbon atoms in the alkyl side chain, e.g. p-m-propyl, p-isopropyl, p-n-butyl, p-sec. butyl, p-t-butyl, p-n-amyl, p-sec.-octyl styrene and a mixture of p-n-amyl styrene with p-n-propyl or p-isopropyl styrene are prepared in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. benzoyl peroxide, by bulk, solution, emulsion or suspension methods. The solution may be in benzene or in a mineral base oil. The polymers are added to lubricating or hydraulic mineral oils to improve their viscosity characteristics.ALSO:Mineral oil compositions of improved viscosity characteristics, comprise a mineral base oil and a polymer of a p-alkyl styrene having from 3 to 20, preferably 3 to 12, carbon atoms in the alkyl side chain, or a mixture of such styrenes. Hydraulic oil compositions preferably contain 0.1 to 10 per cent. by weight and lubricating oils from 0.1 to 5 per cent. by weight of the additive Examples describe the use of p-isopropyl., p-t-butyl, p-n-butyl, p-n-propyl, p-sec. butyl, p-n-amyl or p-sec.-octyl styrenes, or a mixture of p-n-propyl and p-n-amyl or p-isopropyl and p-n-amyl styrenes. The polymerization may be performed in solution in the mineral base oil to give a concentrate. Antioxidants, detergents, anti-wear and anti-rust compounds may also be added.
