Abstract
565,333. High temperature lubricants. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. Nov. 11, 1941, No. 14508. Convention date, Nov. 22, 1940. [Class 91] Contacting surfaces at high temperatures, above about 400‹ F., are lubricated by a composition comprising a mineral seal oil containing dissolved therein a sufficient proportion of a thickening agent, comprising a linear aliphatic hydrocarbon polymer of molecular weight above 800 which depolymerizes at such temperatures without tar, coke, &c. formation, to form a composition having a viscosity of at least 100 seconds s.s.u. at 100‹ F. The compositions may also contain a small proportion of comminuted mica or colloidal graphite. The thickening agent is preferably a polymer or copolymer of unsaturated hydrocarbons ; the polymers or copolymers specified comprise polyisobutylene, polyisoamylene such as polymerized methyl 2-butene-1, isobutylene-butadiene copolymers and isobutylene-ethylene copolymers. The molecular weight of the polymer may be as high as 150,000, the material ranging from a viscous oil to a plastic solid. The proportion of the polymer used varies with its molecular weight, a larger amount of low molecular weight polymer being equivalent to a smaller amount of high molecular weight polymer ; mixtures of such polymers may be used. Thus, in an example, a mineral seal oil contains 2 per cent by weight of polyisobutylene of molecular weight 150,000 and 10 per cent of a lower polymer of molecular weight 5000. In general, the proportion of polymer ranges from 0.1 to 25 per cent by weight. The mineral seal oil constitutes the major proportion of the compositions and is usually more than 60 per cent by weight. The colloidal graphite is preferably used in the form of a suspension in a light hydrocarbon liquid; the proportion of mica or graphite when added ranges from .05-2.0 per cent by weight based on the total composition. Other usual additives may be incorporated in the compositions, such as an oiliness agent, e.g. a low molecular weight alkyl ester of a fatty acid such as an isopropyl ester of wax oxidation acids or the esters of Specification 402,262. The compositions may be used for lubricating oven conveyer chains, annealing oven cars, &c. Specifications 467,932 and 535,293 also are referred to.
