Abstract
1354749 Lubricants; palm oil compositions ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 29 June 1972 [14 July 1971] 32972/71 Heading C5F A palm oil composition comprises a major proportion by wt. of palm oil and 0À01-10 wt. per cent of a polymer of average mol. wt. at least 1000, and having a carbon- and hydrogencontaining backbone bearing a plurality of hydrogen-containing C 12 -C 30 side-chains. The polymers may be polyaddition or polycondensation products of various types, and derived from compounds containing functional groups such as amino, hydroxyl, carboxyl or olefinic groups. Many specific polymers are exemplified. The polymer is dispersed by heating the palm oil/polymer mixture to above 70‹ C., and then cooling to form a 2-phase dispersion of solid crystals in a liquid of pumpable consistency. When used as a lubricant, the composition may contain antioxidants, e.g. phenyl alpha naphthylamine, anti-wear agents, e.g. tricresyl phosphate, and emulsifiers, e.g. alkaline earth metal benzene sulphonates. In examples, the polymer is (1) a condensate of triethanolamine, a C 22+ alkenyl-substituted succinic anhydride and a mixture of C 20 -C 22 fatty acids; (2) a vinyl acetate/C 20 -C 22 alkyl fumarate copolymer.
