Abstract

A bituminous composition suitable for use as a binder for mineral aggregate, for jointing or caulking or for a protective coating or insulation is prepared by heating to about 360 DEG F., when frothing occurs, a fluxed mix of asphaltic bitumin with an unsaturated vegetable oil, in which mix sulphur, in quantity about half of the weight of the oil, has been incorporated, and then subjecting the frothy mass to a prolonged heat treatment at about 450 DEG F., the gases evolved being eradicated until a smooth homogeneous bubble-free mass is obtained. Instead of asphaltic bitumin there may be employed a blend of asphaltic bitumin and refined Lake Asphalt in the ratio of about 6:1 by weight. The vegetable oil is preferably linseed oil or may be rape oil or castor oil or a mixture of these oils, the proportion of oil to blend being preferably about 1 to 3 or 4. Fillers, particularly mineral fillers such as kaolin or china clay, may be incorporated before the final product has cooled and set.
