Abstract

High molecular substances, having molecular weights of more than 5000 according to Staudinger, are intimately mixed with asphaltic bitumen or pitch heated to temperatures within 10 DEG C. of their Ring and Ball melting point. The mixing is preferably carried out by kneading. Suitable high molecular substances are polymers and copolymers of alkanes, alkadienes, vinyl and vinylidene compounds, alkynes and derivatives thereof. After mixing, the composition is preferably heated to a temperature above the Ring and Ball melting point of the bitumen or pitch, but below the decomposition temperature of the high molecular substance.ALSO:Polymers and copolymers of alkadienes, particularly butadiene-vinylidene chloride copolymer, are specified as high molecular substances, having molecular weights of more than 5,000 according to Staudinger, which are intimately mixed with asphaltic bitumen or pitch heated to temperatures within 10 DEG C. of the Ring and Ball melting point. The mixing is preferably carried out by kneading, after which improved effects can be obtained by further heating to temperatures above the Ring and Ball melting point of the bitumen or pitch but below the decomposition temperature of the high molecular substance.
