Drafting apparatus comprises pairs of holding and drafting rollers 12, 13 and 14, 15, and in the zone between them, a number-presenting a non- rotary surface 24 to the fibres so that they are deflected about the surface of one of the holding- rollers, said member adjusting itself to regulate the extent of this deflection as the length of the drafting-zone is changed to suit changes in the staple length of the fibres being pressed. The bar 24 is carried by a member pivoted about the axis of the roller 12 and adjusts itself automatically as the pivoting roller 12 is changed in accordance with the staple length of the fibres. Preferably the arrangement ensures that the sliver enters the nip 14, 15 along the tangential plane thereof, the position of roller 14 being suddenly adjusted when roller 12 is changed. In Fig. 2, the lower rolls are supported by blocks 111, 131, 151 carried in the frame 16 on plane upper surfaces of which are adjustably mounted members 101, 121, 141 carrying the upper rolls. Applied to the ends of each upper roller is a pair of spring-pressed plungers 22 arranged in two parallel arms 17 pivoted to the frame at 19 and interconnected by a bar 20 and retained in operative position by a catch 23. The bar 24 is carried by a pair of bell-cranks 27 pivotally mounted in the roller 12 and which also carry a cleanerstrip 29 which is fixed to a cross-member 30, pressure being applied to the levers 27 by springs 31 secured to arms 17. The ends of bar 24 rest on interchangeable bushings on the lower roller 13 to determine its distance from the latter. In another form, Fig. 2 not shown, the bar 24 is carried at each end by a spring-urged asymmetric flange forming part of a socket in which an end of roller 12 is received, an end of the bar resting against a stop fixed to the roller support 121.
