A machine for enveloping batches of articles 30, e.g. biscuits, in cartons comprises an intermittently rotating pocket wheel with pairs of jaws 5, 11; batches 30 are fed by pockets 34 on an intermittently moving conveyer with side guides 35, into a position immediately above an elevator 2 and below said jaws, the batches abutting a stop 36. The elevator 2, fitted with grippers 3 to prevent articles from falling off the elevator, engages a batch and lifts it between the guides 4 into the jaws, the portions 35A of the side guides having been moved aside by cam action to afford passage for the grippers 3 and the batch. Prior to lifting the batch, a prescored carton blank 31 is introduced by belts 22 into a position immediately between the jaws and the batch 30, and as the batch is lifted, the blank is introduced into the jaws by bars 1. The blank is folded into a U-shape with one arm 31c longer than the other, end flaps 31D being formed by the jaws 5, about the batch. An arm 6 engages the batch 30 before the elevator 2 is retracted and moves with the jaws before the carton over-lap 31c engages a guide 7 thus forming the last side of the carton tube. At station 3 plates 8 and 9 fold the second and third end flaps, and a strip of self-adhesive tape, cut from reel 37 by a knife 38, is applied by a dispensing mechanism 12. The plate 9 traverses completely over the end flaps to retain them until the carton engages a fixed folder 10 which folds the remaining end flap. At station 4, the carton is ejected from the jaws by a member 15, the end flaps being held by the side guides 16, and the tape is sealed by a roller 12. Specification 947,356 is referred to.
