903,131. Packaging machines. HESSER MASCHINENFABRIK-A.G. FR. Oct. 5, 1960 [Nov. 4, 1959], No. 34194/60. Class 94(1). Apparatus for packing in cartons batches of sugar lumps &c., comprises two parallel conveyers, one for advancing the batches and the other for the cartons, and cooperating plungers to grasp a pack of sugar and transfer it into a carton, the plungers having grooved fronts for the reception, at the end of the transfer operation, of holding members which hold the outer lumps of sugar in the carton during the retraction of the plungers. Conveyer chains 1, 2 support receptacles 3, 4 which receive cartons F and sugar lumps Z, respectively. At the loading station E plungers 7, 8 provided with grooved plates 24, grasp the batch of sugar-lumps and convey it into the carton F, plunger 8 travelling through the carton. An arm 14 bearing plates 10, 11 is lowered so that fingers 12 of these plates slide into the grooves 13 of plates 24, to hold the batch in place during the retraction of the plungers, after loading. During loading the end flaps are held open by bars 19, 20. The flaps are closed by means of bars 21, a rotating arm 22, and ploughs 23, as the carton is advanced along the conveyer.
