952,792. Charging shaft furnaces. LONZA WERKE ELEKTROCHEMISCHE FABRIKEN G.m.b.H. May 7, 1962 [May 12, 1961], No. 17450/62. Heading F4B. Apparatus for charging annular concentric zones I-V in a shaft furnace comprises automatic weighing machines 3 and 4 supplying skips 31 and 41, respectively, movable over bins 5 and 6 divided into compartments 5I-5V and 6I-6V corresponding to the above zones, and vibratory shoots 7I-7V and 8I-8V leading from each compartment, the combined bins and shoots being rotatable over the above zones. The machine 3 may be fed with fuel, e.g. coke, of different sizes from hoppers 11 and 12 by vibratory shoots 112 and 122, respectively, and machine 4 with charge material, e.g. limestone, of different sizes from hoppers 21 and 22 by vibratory shoots 212 and 222. Further vibratory shoots 35 and 46, respectively, feed materials from the ships 31 and 41 to the various compartments, the materials being proportioned by weight and size. If the furnace operates unsymmetrically charge material may be delivered to suit the conditions at a particular point by varying the speed of rotation of the individual shoots 7I-7V and 8I-8V. In a modification, Figs. 2 and 4, the compartmented bins 5 and 6 move below the skips 31 and 41, respectively, and the compartments each have sloping walls 53 defining openings 54 corresponding to the roller-mounted vibratory shoots 7I-7V and 8I-8V feeding corresponding annular zones in a rotary charging skip 9. The latter is lifted bodily over the furnace throat and discharged through simultaneously operated segmental doors. The automatic scales 3 and 4 control hopper valves 111, 121, 211 and 221, conveyer devices 112, 122, 212 and 222, and the skip discharge valves 312 and 412. A suitable control device may control the above, the operation of the scales, the drive for the vibratory shoots 7 and 8 and the movements of and discharge of the skip 9 according to a set programme.
