Abstract
Articles of aluminium are etched prior to coating with polytetrafluoroethylene by treatment with a hydrochloric acid solution containing a salt of manganese, cobalt, nickel or tin. In an example the etching bath comprises 120 gm. of nickel chloride per litre of 10% hydrochloric acid; it is postulated that a porous deposit of nickel is formed on the aluminium.ALSO:Aluminium articles are etched by a hydrochloric acid bath containing a salt of manganese, cobalt, nickel or tin, then coated by applying an aqueous suspension of polytetrafluoroethylene by pouring, spraying or flowing; the water is evaporated and the article heated to sinter the polytetrafluoroethylene on the surface. The articles may first be cleaned. In an example a solution of nickel chloride in hydrochloric acid is used as etchant. Aluminium discs may be coated, while rotating, by pouring on a dispersion of polytetrafluoroethylene, any excess being thrown off by centrifugal force.
