Abstract
952,104. Heating travelling wire by induction. TELEFONAKTIEBOLAGET L. M. ERICSSON. April 4, 1961 [April 4, 1960], No. 12070/61. Heading H5H. A travelling wire or band 3, 4, 5 to be softannealed, is passed around a drum 6 mounted on rollers 7 and enclosing the core 1 of a transformer having a primary winding 2. The drum 6 includes a number of metal bars 8 preferably of copper or copper alloy which are insulated from each other, and the drum is so made of metal or insulating material that it does not form a closed circuit around the core 1. One or more turns of the wire 4 on the drum are connected together by the bars 8 to form a closed loop which is heated inductively. As shown, the wire describes a single turn which is connected by the bars 8 occupying an angle a, preferably 70 degrees, over which parts of the wire lie side-by-side. The connection zone may be immersed in the cooling water to suppress arcing. In an alternative arrangement (Fig. 3, not shown), the bars 8 are replaced by a set of external metal friction rollers which are urged by spring action against the turns of the wire 4 over the arc corresponding to the angle a.
