Abstract

A single-phase transformer for electric arc welding comprises a primary and secondary winding on the centre limb of a shell core with control windings on the outer limbs arranged to be connected in pairs in series opposition. The coils 4 . . . 9 are connected in pairs 4 with 7, 5 with 8 and 6 with 9, and the pairs are connected in series with the secondary winding 3. Connections are taken from the junctions of the successive pairs and from the ends of the secondary 3 to terminals 10 . . . 13 of a tapping switch 14. Movement of the switch 14 over the taps 10 . . . 13 progressively reduces the welding current supplied to the electrode 16 by progressively adding the control pairs in series with the secondary winding 3. The coils 4, 5, 6 may have a larger number of turns than the coils 7, 8, 9 and one of the outer limbs may have a greater cross-section to equalize the magnetic induction in the outer limbs. A tap changing switch 15 connected to the primary 2 allows the transformer to be used with different supply voltages.
