Abstract

[Also in Division H2] Constant current or voltage is provided at the rectified output UV to an arc welding set (not shown) by an arrangement comprising two threephase transformers each having a three-column core 11, 21, 31 and 12, 22, 32 carrying respective primary windings 41, 51, 61 and 42, 52, 62 which are series-connected in pairs 41, 42; 51, 52; 61, 62 between the terminals RST of a three phase A.C. supply and a star point, the output of the secondary windings being controlled by a magnetic amplifier. This consists of three cores each having three columns 13, 14, 15; 23, 24, 25; 33, 34, 35, the columns 15, 25, 35 carrying respective control windings 111, 121, 131 connected in parallel to an adjustable D.C. source AB, and the remaining columns being matched each with a column of the transformers to form pairs 11, 13; 12, 14; 21, 23... 32, 34, each pair of columns being surrounded by a secondary winding 71, 72... 92 which are series-connected in pairs 71, 72; 81, 82; 91, 92 between a star point and the rectifier terminals X, Y, Z. By connecting the secondary windings in series or in parallel the voltage/current output characteristic may respectively comprise substantially a constant current portion or a constant voltage portion, Fig. 2 (not shown) respectively suitable for welding with a refractory or coated electrode or with a continuously-fed fusible wire. Modifications include a single winding passing around all three columns 15, 25, 35, parallelconnected primary windings, and tapped primary and/or secondary windings.
