Abstract
952,003. Self-erecting tower cranes. ETABLISSEMENTS WEITZ S.A.-SOC. LES FILS DE JULES WEITZ-CHANTIERS ET ATELIERS DE CONSTRUCTION DE LYONWEITZ REUNIES. Feb. 14, 1962 [Feb. 14, 1961], No. 5687/62. Heading B8B. Telescopic movement between two sections 1, 2 of a tower crane causes the tower to be erected by a tie 5 attached to a chassis 3 by members 8, 9, which swings the tower about a pivot point 4 as it extends. The extension of the tower may be effected either by a separate mechanism 10 or by one of the crane motors which produces luffing, slewing &c. The pivots may comprise removable spindles so that the crane may be split into its component parts to facilitate handling. When in the horizontal position the crane may be slid longitudinally on the chassis to reduce overhang. Further sections may be added to the top of the part 2 of the tower when erected. If a flexible tie 5 is used the tendency for the tower to drop under gravity when its centre of gravity passes over the pivot 4 may be prevented by using jacks or by suitably positioning the pivot 4. One or both sections of the tower may be constrained to move horizontally on the chassis at the beginning of the erecting movement. To improve stability during erection the ballast may be carried below the chassis. The tie 5 is removed after erection of the tower.
