Abstract
The outer conductor of an electric cable (see Division H1) formed of copper strip folded longitudinally around the cable core is provided with a black cupric oxide outer coating to obtain better adherence between the copper and a subsequently extruded polythene layer. The oxide layer may be formed either on one side of the metal stock before it has been slit into tapes and formed, or after the copper tape has been folded around the cable core. The oxidizing bath comprises an aqueous solution of sodium chlorite or potassium chlorite made alkaline by addition of sodium or potassium hydroxide, the chlorite concentration being between 10 grams per litre and saturation, and the hydroxide concentration being between 10 and 1000 grams per litre. The inner face of the tape is masked or otherwise prevented from being oxidized. Specifications 703,782 and 849,021 are referred to.ALSO:The outer conductor of an electric cable (see Division H1) formed of copper strip folded longitudinally around the cable core is provided with an outer coating of hydrogenated polybutadiene in order to provide better adherence for a polythene outer sheath. The side of the copper strip which is to be coated is first brass plated and then the coating thereover may be applied either before the metal stock is cut into strips or after it has been cut and folded around the core. The strip, or folded conductor, is passed through an adhesive applicator which applies a solution of about 10% by weight of hydrogenated polybutadiene with about 3% of sulphur in a solution of toluene or carbon tetrachloride, the solvent then being evaporated to leave a coating about 5 mils or more in thickness. Extrusion of the polyethylene outer sheath is effected at a temperature which vulcanizes the adhesive layer. Specifications 703,782 and 849,021 are referred to.
