Abstract
In the manufacture of oil-impregnated electric cable the core, comprising a conductor or conductors surrounded by an impregnatable material such as paper, is wound overall with a tape made of, or coated with material having a fusing temperature of, say, 130 DEG C. after which a length is dried under vacuum whilst maintained at a lower temperature, say 110 DEG C. The temperature is then increased so that the tape or the coating thereon fuses to form when cool a continuous and substantially waterproof seal around the core. The seal may be removed, or breached at intervals, immediately before or during the process of sheathing the core with lead or other metal. The tape may be made wholly of a polyolefine or other thermoplastic material or may comprise a metal base coated with thermoplastic material or low melting point solder. With the coated metal type of tape two layers may be wound on the core, with coated sides contacting, and fusion may be effected by passing current through the tape.
