Abstract
1,039,625. Electric cables. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. July 31, 1964, No. 30316/64. Heading H1A. In an electric cable having a longitudinally seamed metal sheath 2 with overlapping edge portions 5 and 6, the outer edge portion 6 is corrugated, as at 7, or folded over on itself (Fig. 5, not shown) to provide a rigid edge which does not tend to buckle and lift away from the cable core 1 during the sheathing process. In other embodiments (Figs. 4 and 6, not shown) both edge portions 5 and 6 may be corrugated or folded over on themselves. An extruded outer sheath 3 of synthetic thermoplastic is provided, and the sheath 2 may be coated on at least its outer surface with a film of synthetic thermoplastic capable of fusing with the outer thermoplastic sheath 3 during the extrusion process. Fig. 3 (not shown) illustrates the cable assembly process in which the cable core 1 and a metal strip for forming the sheath 2 are fed to a sheathing tool 11. Rollers 10 corrugate or fold the edge of the strip, and further rollers (not shown) may additionally corrugate the strip in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis of the cable. The metal-sheathed core passes to an extrusion head 12 and the completed cable is wound on to a take-up spool 13.
