Abstract
Pellets for making up and maintaining chromic acid baths (see Division C7) are formed from a composition comprising predominantly moist CrO3, as chromic acid or anhydride, with or without a chromate, dichromate or polychromate of an alkali or alkaline earth metal e.g. Na, K, Mg, Sr or Ca, and/or SrSO4 and K2SiF6, to which may be added between 0.005 and 0.75% of an anti-misting agent such as a fluorinated hydrocarbon. Similar pellets for chromating baths comprise moist CrO3, a soluble nitrate and a soluble sulphate. U.S.A. Specifications 2,750,334, 2,750,335, 2,750,336, 2,750,337 and 2,846,380 are referred to.ALSO:Chromium is electrodeposited on a cathode from an electrolyte made up and maintained by adding pellets formed from a composition comprising predominantly moist CrO3, as chromic acid or anhydride with or without SrSO4 and K2SiF6, to which may be added between 0.005 and 0.75% of an anti-misting agent such as a fluorinated hydrocarbon. A chromate, dichromate or polychromate of an alkali metal such as Na or K, or alkaline earth metal such as Mg, Ca or Sr, may also be included in the composition. Also, chromate conversion coatings are produced on Cd or Zn by immersing the metal in an aqueous chromating solution made up and maintained by adding similar pellets formed from a composition comprising moist CrO3, a soluble nitrate and a soluble sulphate (excluding reducing agents), e.g. Na2SO4, NaHSO4, NaNO3, or H2SO4 and HNO3. For example, the solution may contain 65 g/l CrO3, 8 g/l H2SO4, 3.5 g/l HNO3 and 13 g/l acetic acid. Similar moist CrO3 containing pellets may be used for chromate anodizing baths. U.S.A.
