Abstract

An alkali metal dichromate dihydrate solution and an excess of sulphuric acid are reacted together to obtain a crystalline mass comprising chromium trioxide and sodium hydrogen sulphate and excess of sulphuric acid. To this mass is added a solid alkaline metal dichromate or a saturated aqueous solution thereof in an amount in excess of that required to react with the free sulphuric acid of the crystalline mass, and the crude crystalline reaction product is separated to yield a crude form of chromium trioxide. The composition of matter contains between 70 and 95 per cent chromic acid between 1 and 25 per cent sodium bisulphate and the remainder water. The parent Specification describes a similar process for the preparation of pure trioxide.ALSO:A composition consisting of 70-95 per cent chromic acid, 1-25 per cent sodium bisulphate, remainder water, may be used in the "chrome-dipping" of copper and bronze, and in the production of conversion coatings on cadmium and zinc.
