Abstract

Basic salts of di-isopropyl salicylic acid are obtained by treating di-isopropyl-salicylic acid with considerably more than a chemically equivalent proportion of a compound of a metal preferably in an alkaline reacting medium such as in an alkali metal hydroxide solution. Specified metals are: lithium, calcium, strontium, barium, magnesium, zinc, cadmium, beryllium, aluminium, nickel and cobalt. In examples relating to the preparation of such salts the reactions take place in benzene, methyl alcohol, and ethyl alcohol.ALSO:Basic salts of di-isopropyl salicylic acid are obtained by treating di-isopropyl-salicylic acid with considerably more than a chemically equivalent proportion of a compound of a metal preferably in an alkaline reacting medium such as in an alkali metal hydroxide solution. Specified metals are: lithium, calcium, strontium, barium, magnesium, zinc, cadmium, beryllium, aluminium, nickel and cobalt. In examples, basic salts of di-isopropyl salicylic acid with the metal named are obtained by treating: (1) 0.02 gm. e.w. acid in benzene solution with 0.03 gm. e.w. aqueous zinc sulphate in the presence of 0.03 gm. e.w. aqueous sodium hydroxide; (2) 0.02 gm. e.w. acid in benzene solution with 0.04 gm. e.w. aqueous zinc sulphate in the presence of 0.04 gm. e.w. aqueous sodium hydroxide; (3) 0.05 gm. e.w. acid with 0.1 gm. e.w. magnesium as the methoxide in methyl alcohol; (4) a 95 per cent ethanol solution of the acid with a solution of beryllium in 10 N pure hydrochloric acid (the amounts being in the ratio of 0.5 gm. e.w. acid to 1.0 gm. e.w. metal) in the presence p of sufficient aqueous methanol to give a homogeneous solution.
