Abstract

Low carbon ferrous metals are prepared for nitreous enamelling by pickling in a sulphuric acid bath, depositing on the pickled surface a coating of a phosphate and elemental sulphur, sealing such coating with a thin coating of antimony and sealing the antimony coating with a thin coating of nickel. The pickling bath may contain 4-8 per cent. sulphuric acid to which is preferably added manganese dioxide, manganese nitrate, lithium nitrate, potassium nitrate and/or sodium nitrate, as well as ferrous sulphate and sodium bisulphate and strontium carbonate, lithium carbonate, lithium phosphate or titanium sulphate with a foaming agent, and a wetting agent. After pickling, a rinsing bath containing 0.5-1 per cent. of sulphuric acid is used. In the next stage, a bath of phosphoric acid and a sulphur-liberating compound such as sodium hydrosulphite, sodium thiosulphate or a polysulphide, which may also contain lithium phosphate, is employed at 140 DEG -185 DEG F. The article is then dried or rinsed and immersed in a bath of potassium antimonyl tartrate preferably containing a thiosulphate. It is then again dried or rinsed and nickel deposited chemically or electrolytically; a suitable chemical plating bath comprises nickel chloride, sodium thyophosphite, ammonium chloride, sodium citrate and ammonium hydroxide at pH 8-10; in preparing this bath, nickel chloride and ammonium chloride are first mixed and purified by the addition of hydrogen peroxide.
