Abstract

A rust-preventing heat-resistant coating composition comprises a mixture of (a) an aqueous gel of zinc hydroxide and ammonium chloride; (b) a metal salt; (c) a metal oxide; (d) aluminium, zinc or aluminium gold powder pigment; and (e) a solution of a vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride copolymer in an organic solvent. The gel (a) may be obtained by mixing aqueous ammonium hydroxide and zinc chloride solution. Specified metal salts (b) are metal borates e.g. calcium borate. The metal oxide (c) may be antimony oxide and the organic solvent in (d) may be a mixture of MEK, butanol and toluene. The preferred method of formulating is to mill the aqueous gel with the metal pigment, salt and oxide to obtain an intimate mixture which is then thoroughly mixed with the copolymer solution and the whole worked up to a homogeneous product.
