Abstract

A copolymer of vinyl chloride and 1,2-transdichloroethylene is obtained by bulk polymerization with a catalyst at - 5 to - 30 DEG C. while subjecting to a shearing action. The shearing action can be applied by using a cylindrical rotating vessel containing balls or rods, by a stirring mechanism having a shearing action such as a planet-type stirrer or by using a ribbon mixer. The catalyst may be a mixture of a peroxide, e.g. hydrogen peroxide or cyclohexane-sulphonyl-acetyl peroxide, a reducing agent, e.g. ascorbic acid, monoacetyl hydrazine or dihydroxy acetone and a salt of a metal, e.g. iron (such as iron sulphate) or copper; aluminium triethyl or boron triethyl can also be used.
