Abstract

1425624 Derivatization of starch under microwave heating SCHOLTEN-HONIG RESEARCH BV 9 Aug 1974 [10 Aug 1973] 37927/73 Headings C3U and C3G Starch is chemically modified, e.g. esterified or etherified, by subjecting a mixture of starch and one or more modifying agents which effecting a chemical transformation of the starch molecule to microwave energy under such conditions that the water content during the radiation treatment is or reduces to less than 10% by weight of the starch. The modifying agent may be monochloroacetic acid or an alkali metal or ammonium salt thereof, a mixture of urea and a phosphorus containing acid or the alkali metal or ammonium salt thereof, a mixture of urea and sulphonic acid or ammonium maleate. Starch may also be subjected to graft polymerization with acrylamide in the presence of colloidal silica and benzoyl peroxide under microwave irradiation.
