Abstract

An aluminium surface, particularly foil for an electrolytic capacitor or for lithographic use, is electrolytically etched under a pulsating D.C., of which the degree of pulsation is less than 50% and the average density is more than 50 amp./dm.2, in an aqueous solution of a halogen-containing salt, such as an alkali metal chloride, e.g. NaC1, bromide, iodide or chlorate, of concentration at least 3-molar and temperature from 70 DEG C. to its boiling-point. The solution may also contain 1-5% HC1. Preferably an unsmoothed rectified current from a 1-or 3-phase A.C. of sine wave form is used as the pulsating D.C., the frequency of pulsation varying between 50 and 2000 c/s. Prior to etching, the aluminium foil may be degreased and pickled.
