Abstract

948,123. Fluid-pressure servomotor control systems. BENDIX CORPORATION. Oct. 8, 1962 [Oct. 11, 1961], No. 38038/62. Heading G3P. [Also in Division H1] The jet pipe of a servomotor control valve is located between the centre and periphery of a bimetallic ring 32 consisting of a ring of positive magnetostrictive material, e.g. nickel, bonded to a ring of negative magnetostrictive material e.g. "Invar" (Registered Trade Mark). A second ring 30, of similar construction, is connected in spaced relation to the first ring by a first yoke 52, 54 and a second quadrature yoke 40, 50. The first yoke 52, 54 comprises permanent magnets which produce a polarizing magnetic flux in the rings and the second yoke 40, 50 has a coil 44 associated with it to produce a controllable magnetic flux in the rings. These fluxes interact to give different flux levels in the four quadrants of the rings and thus distort them. The distortion of ring 32 will be transmitted to the jet pipe to produce a movement which is proportional to the current in coil 44 and has a direction dependent on the polarity of the current in the coil.
