Abstract

800,131. Electric transducers. FERRANTI, Ltd. March 24, 1955 [March 30, 1954], No. 9216/54. Class 40 (1). An electro-magnetic pick-off is of the type having two members of magnetic material designed for relative movement in either a plane or on part of the surface of an imaginary sphere, and defining between them four magnetic circuits each having a pick-off winding individual to it so that movement of one member relative to the other affects the relative values of the reluctances of the four magnetic circuits. The fixed member 10, Fig. 1, carries all the windings and may include an inner limb 12 carrying a primary winding, the centre line 13 of which limb 12 is aligned on a point about which the member 11 may swing in two dimensions. The limbs are joined by a yoke 19 and are provided with part-spherical pole faces which are complementary to the lower face of the member 11. In operation, when the member 11 is directly above the pole faces of the limbs the reluctances of all four magnetic circuits are equal. If member 11 now moves slightly, Fig. 3, the reluctance values will be altered and a correcting error signal developed. Similarly a signal will be developed when member 11 moves in the opposite direction. In a modification the wound member may move, or both members may move, and the members may be curved otherwise than in Fig. 1 or be flat. Where the pick-off includes a primary winding as in Fig. 1 then the four other windings are connected in series opposed pairs, but where no primary is included the four windings are in series-opposed pairs as before and each pair is connected with two resistors as a bridge, the signal in respect of each pair being taken between the common point of the two windings and the common point of the two resistors whilst the supply voltage is applied across the other two points of the bridge.
