Abstract
822,485. Electron lenses. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 1, 1955 [Dec. 4, 1954] ,No. 34410/55. Class 39(1). [Also in Group XXXV] A permanent magnet electron lens in which the magnetic field strength can be varied comprises two oppositely magnetised annular magnets 3, 5 and two soft iron rings 7, 21, with profiled facing edges 17, 55, disposed between the magnets and rotatable relative to one another to vary the reluctance in the path of the magnetic flux. The profiled edge 17 of the ring 7 consists of a number of teeth which co-operate with a similar number of teeth or holes 55 in the ring 19, or both profiled edges may comprise cam-shaped surfaces. The outer edge of ring 7 may also be provided with teeth 25 for co-operation with holes or teeth 53 in an outer ring 27 for additional control of the magnetic flux. The edges of the ring 27 may be provided with teeth for co-operation with teeth provided in outer discs 9, 11. The magnets may be made from the ceramic material described in Specification 708,127 [Group XXXV] and rings 7, 19 and 27 may consist of nickel or ceramic materials instead of soft iron.
