Abstract

An aqueous emulsion containing a bitumen or pitch binder and a natural or synthetic elastomer is prepared by mixing an emulsion of the binder with an emulsion of the elastomer, the pH of each continuous phase being adjusted, before mixing, to pH 2-4. The binder in water emulsion may be prepared by adding a solution of an oil-in-water type emulsifying agent in molten binder to a solution of a similar, preferably the same, emulsifying agent in water. Diamines having 18 carbon atoms are preferred and pH adjustment may be effected with hydrochloric acid. The elastomer emulsion may be prepared by adding an oil-in-water type emulsifying agent, e.g. the condensation products, of ethylene oxide and octylphenol, to an alkaline latex, followed by hydrochloric acid addition. The mixed emulsions may contain 0.1 to 12% elastomer and 50-70% binder. Examples refer to the mixing of a bitumen emulsion of pH 2.3 with a stabilized natural rubber latex of pH 4, and with a neoprene latex having a pH of 3.5 and containing as emulsifying agent the condensation product of 9 moles of ethylene oxide with one of octylphenol.ALSO:An aqueous emulsion containing a bitumen or pitch binder and a natural or synthetic elastomer is prepared by mixing an emulsion of the binder with an emulsion of the elastomer, the pH of each continuous phase being adjusted, before mixing, to pH 2-4.
