Abstract

An elastic ply yarn composed of man-made continuous filaments of natural or synthetic polymer(s) e.g. cellulose esters, polyamides, polyesters, acrylics, vinyls, polyolefines, is made by (a) imparting voile twist e.g. 500-900 turns/metre, individually and in the same direction to at least two multifilament yarns (b) subjecting such yarns, separately or after juxtaposition thereof, to a light setting and/or weak counter-twist whereby the first deformations formed in the single filaments are temporarily set or held (c) assembling the yarns with crepe twist e.g. 2000-2700 turns/metre, applied in the same direction as the voile twist (d) setting the assembly e.g. by wet (steam) or by heat (e) untwisting the set yarn by a number of turns greater than the crepe twist. The steps c, d and e (in part) may be effected in one sequence on a false-twisting frame, e then being separately completed. The component yarns may differ as regards materials, count, degree of twist, colour or finish in order to produce differential effects in fabric knitted or woven from, or including, the ply yarn e.g. one component may loop in relation to another or a variegated effect may be obtained. Two similar elastic yarns of opposite residual twist may be knitted in alternate courses e.g. in the manufacture of orthopaedic support stockings. The elastic yarn may be employed as weft with warp of polyamide yarn in a one-way stretch woven fabric.
