Abstract

756,584. Finishing yarns; crepe fabrics. BRITISH NYLON SPINNERS Ltd. Feb. 2, 1955 [Feb. 6, 1954], No. 3535/54. Classes 120 (3) and 142 (4). [Also in Group VIII] Dyed and crimped yarn is produced by subjecting a thermoplastic continuous filamentary yarn, e.g. yarn composed of synthetic linear polyamide, polyethylene terephthalate, or cellulose acetate, to the successive treatments of twisting to a low degree, i.e. of the order of 5-12 turns per inch; setting said twist; forming into a package (" mock-cake ") by winding on to a collapsible mandrel which is thereafter removed ; dyeing in such package form; optionally, rinsing and applying anti-static lubricant; winding on to a bobbin; further twisting in the same direction and to a high degree, i.e. of the order of 60-100 turns per inch; setting the high twist by a treatment of greater severity than the previous setting and dyeing treatments; back-twisting to the original untwisted condition. The setting may be achieved by heat or heat and swelling agents, e.g. by means of steam applied in a pressure steam chest. Crimped yarns of opposite twist may be folded to produce a balanced bulky yarn. The yarn may be formed into fabrics in which single or pairs of yarns alternate, as to the sense of the twist they contain, in the warp or weft of a woven fabric or in successive course of a knitted fabric.
