Abstract

903,946. Laminates. BTR. INDUSTRIES Ltd. May 15, 1959 [May 19, 1958], No. 16072/58. Class 140. [Also in Group IX] Belting such as conveyer belting is made by embedding in elastomeric material such as natural or synthetic rubber or polyvinyl chloride a fabric some warp and/or weft threads of which have a greater crimp than other such threads, the differences of crimp being produced by using in the warp and/or weft some threads having different shrinkage or stress-recovery characteristics from other threads and effecting such differential shrinkage or stress-recovery during or after weaving. Preferably continuous filament threads, e.g. of nylon or rayon, are used with staple threads, e.g. of nylon or cotton, in a warp in which all threads are equally tensioned during weaving or the continuous threads are subjected to higher tension, the staple threads in both cases finally having the greater crimp. Alternatively threads of different twist or different diameters may be used, in the latter case those having less stress recovery (and therefore being crimped) having up to four times the diameter of the non-crimped threads. Crimping during or after weaving may be effected by heating or steaming to shrink the continuous threads. A further method is to use as the non- crimp thread a yarn with a high-twist set with water-soluble size, the latter being washed out after weaving. After weaving treatment may be combined with the application of elastomeric material to produce belting. The fabric preferably comprises individual warp threads of each kind arranged, alternately, but other arrangements are possible. Specification 811,108 is referred to.
