Abstract

A method of making fabrics for papermaking machines comprises weaving warp and weft yarns of resilient synthetic fibre into an endless fabric with the weft yarns extending in the endless direction and the warp yarns transverse thereto, placing the fabric in sufficient tension in the warp direction to straighten the warp yarns while placing the fabric in sufficiently low tension in the weft direction that the straightening of the warp yarns causes the weft yarns to become crimped, and bonding the weft yarns to the warp yarns while under such tension. Preferably the fabric is woven as a continuous tube with each weft yarn forming a substantially continuous helix extending circumferentially of the tube. The fibres may be polyamide fibres such as Nylon, polyester fibres such as "Dacron" (Registered Trade Mark), acrylic fibres such as "Orlon" (Registered Trade Mark) and "Acrilan" (Registered Trade Mark) or copolymer fibres such as "Dynel" (Registered Trade Mark and "Saran" (Registered Trade Mark).
