Abstract

Fabrics woven or knitted from cotton and crimped fibres of fully synthetic organic material in combination are treated with aqueous caustic alkali of a mercerizing concentration until shrinkage of the cotton has taken place, and the caustic alkali is then removed to produce a soft, warm hand and wool-like characteristics. The fully synthetic organic fibre material may be a polyamide, polyester or vinyl polymer or copolymer, e.g. polyacrylonitrile. Endless filament bundles of fully synthetic organic material may be crimped by high twisting, setting, backtwisting and heat setting in stretched condition or may be crimped in zig-zag shape with the aid of inter-engaging toothed rollers, by introduction into a stuffing box or by drawing over an edge, and may be used as such or cut up into staple fibres. Alternatively the pre-cut staple fibres can be crimped by temporary high-twisting in the form of a spun yarn or by treatment in a stuffing box. The fabrics may be woven or knitted from yarns spun from cotton fibres and the crimped staple fibres or from yarns obtained by twisting together endless crimped filament bundles and cotton roving, or cotton yarns and endless crimped filament bundles, or yarns or threads of crimped staple fibres, can be worked up side by side into fabrics by alternate weaving in of the two types of yarn in the warp and/or weft or by knitting alternate rows of meshes of the two types of yarn. The two types of yarn may be worked up into woven or knitted fabrics to form patterns. Aqueous caustic soda solutions of 22 DEG -38 DEG B<\>ae. are preferably used but caustic potash solutions are also suitable. The fabric produced may subsequently be heat-set at 160 DEG -230 DEG C., treated with a synthetic resin finish, e.g. with an aqueous solution of a ureaformaldehyde condensate followed by heating above 100 DEG C. to increase its crease resistance, bleached with sodium chlorite and calendered.
