Abstract

Caprolactam is produced by reacting cyclohexane carboxylic acid and/or other cyclohexane carbo-compound, with a nitrylsulphuric acid compound in the presence of sulphuric acid. Sulphur trioxide may also be present, e.g. as oleum. The reaction may be carried out in a solvent, e.g. a saturated hydrocarbon and in the presence of a substance to counteract oxidation, e.g. piperidine. Nitrobenzene is obtained as a by-product.
