In a mechanical seal for a rotary shaft 1 comprising a rotary seal member 4 resiliently urged axially by springs 5 into contact with a non- rotary seal member 3, the seal members are split into arcuate sections to permit their removal or replacement laterally of the shaft and at least one member 4 is sealed in a carrier 12 or housing by a split rubber &c. ring 16 and the axial thrust on that member 4, due to the springs 5, is transmitted to it through the ring 16 in such a manner that the ring is compressed to grip the member and hold its sections together. The O-ring 16 has a free outer diameter greater than that of the space in which it is located so that, when assembled, it grips the member 4 by a force which is increased by the ring being further compressed between shoulders 11 and 15 on the member and carrier 12 respectively by the springs 5. The carrier 12 is slidable on a sleeve 17 which is secured to the shaft and has recesses 21 for the springs 5. Keys 24 on a sleeve 22 secured to the shaft drivably engage keyways 25 in the carrier 12 which drives the member 4 by means of pins 26. The keys 24 are also used during removal of the seal to force the member 4 out of the carrier by engagement with an internal flange 28 on the latter. The member 3 is sealed and supported in the shaft housing 2 by rubber &c. split rings 7 and 8. In a modification the 0-ring 16 is replaced by a strip of rectangular section which fills the space between the shoulders 11 and 15 and may have its inner surface coated with an adhesive so that when wrapped around the sections of the member 4 during assembly it sticks to them and holds them together. The strip may be reinforced by cords which may be of synthetic or natural fibre, or metallic or synthetic resin filament and may be embedded in the strip, located at its inner edge surface, or wound around its outer surface in the form of a continuous cord. In a further modification, the strip may engage between conical surfaces in the member 4 and carrier 12. In still further modifications, the ring 16 has a right-angled triangular crosssection.
