Abstract

1,006,494. Mechanical seals. BORGWARNER CORPORATION. Aug. 12, 1963 [Aug. 15, 1962], No. 31774/63. Heading F2B. A seal for use between relatively-rotating parts comprises a sealing ring 12, the axial thrust on which is opposed by a helical garter spring 13 co-operating with a frusto-conical tubular member 11 connected to the sealing ring by a flexible boot member 10 enclosing the member 1. The flexible member 10 is detachably connected with the ring 12 by arranging for its serrated end portion to engage a groove in the ring. Relative rotation of the ring 12 and conical member 11 is prevented by protuberances 20 co-operating with grooves 24 in the ring. The ring is preferably made of a phenolic condensation product impregnated with graphite and the boot member of rubber.
