Abstract
941,792. Storing liquefied gases. CHICAGO BRIDGE & IRON CO. Oct. 27, 1960 [May 6, 1960], No. 36840/60. Heading F4P. A support system for a cryogenic liquid storage vessel 10, e.g. for liquefied gas, comprises a column stub 11 of a metal such as aluminium or stainless steel having strength and ductility at the low operating temperature of the vessel, and a stub column extension 12 of a metal, e.g. nickel steel alloy, having a lower coefficient of thermal conductivity than the column stub 11. The column stub 11 and the extension 12 are connected together by a bolted flanged connection 18, a bearing pad 19 of insulating material, e.g. asbestos, being disposed therebetween. The extension 12 rests upon a base-plate 14 which also supports an outer column 15 for an outer shell 16 and insulating material 17. The bearing pad 19 may be dispensed with or the connection 18 may be such as to permit horizontal sliding movement between the column stub 11 and the extension 12. Alternatively, the storage vessel may be supported by tension rods, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), comprising two metal parts interconnected by a turnbuckle or other connection, e.g. of plastic. The rods may be replaced by flexible suspenders, e.g. chains. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 893,537 and 894,173.
