Abstract

910,224. Storing liquefied gases. CHICAGO BRIDGE & IRON CO. Oct. 27, 1960 [Dec. 7, 1959], No. 36842/60. Class 8(2). A support system for a cryogenic liquid storage vessel 16 comprises a plurality of padplates 17 secured to the vessel and engaged by open looped tension members 15 suspended from an elevated structure spaced from the vessel. As shown, the elevated structure is the support structure for an outer shell 10 which is insulated from the vessel 16, a reinforcing member 13 encircling columns 11 being provided, to which is attached, e.g. by welding, gusset plates 14 having connected thereto the ends of the tension members 15. The latter may each be a bar as shown or a chain or a cable one end of which is adjustably attached to the elevated structure, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown). The vessel 16 may be of aluminium, stainless steel or nickel steel, the material employed for the tension members preferably having a lower coefficient of thermal conductivity than that for the vessel. The shell 10 may be of metal sheet or foil in which case the elevated structure may consist of horizontally placed circular or polygonal reinforcing members positioned by a plurality of peripherally spaced columns.
