Abstract

893,537. Storage containers for liquefied gas. CHICAGO BRIDGE & IRON CO. Nov. 1, 1960 [Jan. 11, 1960], No. 37429/60. Class 8(2). A vessel 10 for storing liquefied gas is supported on columns 13 which are stressed in the unloaded and warm condition of the vessel to reduce the magnitude of the bending stresses which would otherwise be induced in the column when the vessel is being cooled to its operating temperature. An outer vessel 11 is spaced and insulated from the inner vessel 10 and is supported on columns 15 which are provided with base plates 16 and are supported on foundations 17, the columns 13 having base plates 14 which are slidably supported on the base plates 16. After the vessel 10 has been tested by being filled with a liquid preferably having a higher specific gravity than the liquefied gas, the test liquid is withdrawn and the columns 13 are displaced to compensate for the calculated contraction amount of the vessel 10 by jacking means 18 applied preferably at the base plate 14. The inner vessel 10 and at least a part of each of its supporting columns 13 are made of materials not embrittled at the service temperatures, e.g. aluminium, stainless steel and nickel steel alloys.
