941,060. Magnetic couplings. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. Sept. 6, 1962, No. 34236/62. Heading H2A. A magnetic transmission comprises three mutually rotatable members: an outer member having interdigitated teeth 18, 19 excited by permanent magnet 22, an inner member having the same or a different number of interdigitated teeth 50 51 excited by permanent magnet 52, and an intermediate member 24 having rings of interdigitated poles corresponding to the inner or outer set. Any one of these members may be fixed and the other two rotate to provide various ratios. Exciting coils may replace the magnets. Shaded poles may be used on the intermediate member to ensure the correct direction of starting, the shading winding being disconnected at speed, if desired. Alternatively additional magnets or spring-loaded cams may be used. A planar-air gap form is also described, Fig. 6, not shown.
