Abstract
1,034,746. Magnetic couplings. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. Feb. 24, 1965 [May 28, 1964], No. 22192/64. Heading H2A. In a modification of the magnetic transmission described in Specification 941,060, the necessity for using curved magnetic members is avoided by the use in the middle member of two adjacent rings each having inwardly and outwardly directed poles, the inner and outer members having corresponding axially spaced pole-caps. Thus instead of the plates being curved to interdigitate, flat laminations may be used. In the cylindrical air-gap type in Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), inner and outer rotors 10, 11 have different numbers of wound or permanently magnetized poles each having transversely laminated flux distributers 16, 24 and axially separated pole-shoes 13, 13<SP>1</SP>; 14, 14<SP>1</SP> and 21<SP>1</SP>, 21<SP>11</SP>; 22<SP>1</SP>, 22<SP>11</SP> respectively. Radially between these rotors, is a further rotor 12 comprising axially spaced stacks 17, 18 with alternately situated poles 26, 27 and 28, 30 registering with alternate poles on the outer and inner rotors respectively. Some of the poles may be shaded or the device may be magnetically or mechanically biased for starting. The device may be linear.
