Abstract

1,187,758. Magnetic couplings. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. 7 Feb., 1969, No. 6698/69. Heading H2A. In a rotary or linear magnetic transmission similar in principle to that described in Specification 941,060 comprising three concentric and mutually rotatable members 10, 20, 30, the inner and outer members 10, 30 of which have even numbers of teeth, the intermediate or core member 20 has outer and inner sets of teeth 26, 28 equal in number to half the number of teeth on the members 10, 30 respectively. The teeth on the latter members are excited either electromagnetically or by permanent magnets so that successive teeth are of opposite polarity. Any one of the three members may be locked whilst the other two act as driver and driven members to provide different ratios. The member 10 consists of pole-members 12, 12<1> with shanks 16, Fig. 2, mounted on spaced non-magnetic rings 14 whilst the core member 20 comprises two spaced apart rings 24. Member 30 comprises a square shank 32 integral with a shaft 18 and having four pole-members secured to its faces. To ensure the correct direction of starting shaded poles may be provided on the core member. Alternatively permanent magnets or a cam with a spring-loaded follower may be used. Alternatively, two transmissions could be coupled together with a displacement between them so that when one is at rest with unlike poles adjacent, the other is at rest with poles in a midway position.
