940,982. Brushes for dynamo-electric machines. J. B. TIGRETT. Nov. 19, 1959 [Nov. 21, 1958], No. 39272/59. Heading H2A. [Also in Divisions F2, F4 and G1] A carbon brush 126 sliding in a holder 120 is urged into contact with an electrical armature 122 by means of a self-extending coil spring 128 having its free end 132, which may be unstressed, secured to the holder 120. The spring 128 is stressed longitudinally to assume, in its free state, a tightly coiled condition, and then transversely so that it is of concave-convex cross-sectional curvature with the convex surface facing inwardly toward the centre of the coil. The ratio of longitudinal to transverse stressing is chosen so that the spring is selfextending, however, this ratio may be varied so that a short section at the end 136 of the spring does not completely unwind. In an alternative arrangement, Figs. 13, 14, not shown, the free end of the spring is fixed to the brush.
