Abstract
842,878. Brushes and brush-holders for dynamo-electric machines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Sept. 21, 1956 [Sept. 23, 1955], No. 28943/56. Class 35. In a dynamo-electric machine brush-holder assembly comprising a brush casing 11 in which a brush 12 is longitudinally slidably mounted alongside a reaction surface 29 of the casing and the brush is urged towards a commutator 10 by a spring 14 having a close-wound spiral 15, the outer end of which is unwound and secured to the casing whilst the turns rest adjacent or on a surface at the outer end 26 of the brush 12 which ensures that the pressure exerted on the brush has both axial and transverse components, the brush is provided at its outer end 26 with an abutment located at an acute angle with respect to the reaction surface 29 and against which abutment the spring-coiled end engages to stop movement of the coiled end towards the reaction surface. As shown, the abutment is provided by a flange 32 of a plate 28 fixed to the top of the brush but in other embodiments, not shown, comprises a notch in the brush itself, or a cradle extension of the plate 28, or a pin or flange fixed to the brush top. A leafspring 72 shown may provide additional pressure for the spring 14, or alternatively acts as a keeper to shield the spring 14.
