940,762. Wells. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. July 26, 1962, No. 28793/62. Heading E1F. Hydrocarbon fluids are recovered from a formation by reducing the pressure of a hot water flow, and passing the resultant steam and water mixture through the formation. Hot water from a heater 7 passes through a restriction 11, such as a flow bean or valve, to reduce the pressure prior to injection as the mixture into the formation 5 through tubing 4 of the well 1. Injection may take place through more than one well, and the fluids may be produced through one or more further wells, the injection continuing during production. The fluids may be produced through the well 1 by stopping injection after an interval, and by producing through the tubing for a further interval. The mixture may be injected into the upper part of the formation, and the fluids be simultaneously produced from the lower part of the formation, the same well being used for injection and production. The restriction may be at the lower end of the tubing, or the restriction may be dispensed with, the reduction of pressure occurring outside the lower end of the tubing.
