Abstract

In a method of secondary recovery a production well overtaken by a thermal reaction is converted to become an air or water injection well to maintain or direct the reaction. Air is injected into the central well of a fivespot well pattern in a larger field, in situ combustion of the underground hydrocarbons adjacent the central well is started, and the four outer wells are produced. When the combustion front breaks through at a well this well is converted an air injection well, the remaining outer wells are shut in, the initial air injection well is converted to water injection and a well adjacent the five-spot pattern is produced. The process may be continued following break through in the last mentioned well by keeping one well as an air injection well and converting the other wells to water injection according to which well in the field is required to produce next. If the initial break through is at the wrong well this or adjacent producing wells may be used for water injection to induce the combustion front to break through a desired well so that the process may be continued by injecting air into the desired well after break through.
