Abstract

1,168,493. Wells &c. STRUTHERS THERMO-FLOOD CORP. 25 March, 1968 [14 April, 1967], No. 17259/67. Heading E1F. A method of recovering oil from an underground reservoir comprises injecting fluid which reduces the viscosity of the reservoir oil through a well into the reservoir, heating the oil in the reservoir for at least 10 ft. from the well, and producing oil from the reservoir through a well. The fluid (e.g. CO 2 , natural gas, ethane or L.P.G.) may be supplied with a fluid which does not reduce the viscosity of the oil. The oil may be heated by in situ combustion or by steam or water injection. In a cyclic method using one well for both injection and production the fluid supplied for each cycle is 0.01-2.00% of the pore volume of the reservoir and the oil is heated by at least 100‹F. In a continuous method, fluid amounting to 1.0-10.0% of the pore space is injected and followed by steam. When a large portion of the reservoir has been heated by 100‹F the supply of steam may be replaced by water. The supply of fluid and steam in a continuous method may be cyclic. The producing wells may be fractured or the reservoir immediately surrounding them may be treated with fluid or heated.
