Abstract

In a method of gasifying coal deposits underground at least two bores spaced apart are sunk into a portion of the coal deposit and a heating medium is supplied to one of the bores for a time and at such a pressure that the coal in between the supply bore and at least one other bore is fissured, heated and partially degasified whereon the supply of heating medium is terminated and replaced by a combustion supporting medium to gasify the fissured and heated portion of the coal deposit, the resulting gas being withdrawn from the said other bore. An explosive charge may be exploded in the supply bore and/or removed when the coal has been fissured but before the combustion supporting medium is supplied. The heating medium may be heated by a nuclear reactor disposed in the supply bore.
