Abstract

716,620. Underground gasification. MINISTER OF FUEL & POWER. July 30, 1952 [Aug. 30, 1951], No. 20546/51. Class 55 (2) In a method of establishing a combustion area in a coal seam for underground gasification in which fluid pressure is applied to one of two boreholes which are to serve as gas inlet and offtakes to open up an area of the coal seam, a liquid is used as or in conjunction with a pressure fluid which liquid is itse capable of or contains matter capable of sealing very small fissures at the boundaries of the area affected by fluid pressure. Suitable liquids are a viscous oil or liquid, for example water, containing suspended solids such as clay, cement, sand or coal dust. These liquids may be used either by themselves or in conjunction with the use of air or water as a pressure fluid. Specification 681,720 is referred to.
